Lou Conter, the last known survivor of the battleship Arizona, which sank with the loss of 1,177 sailors and Marines in Japan’s sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, plunging the United States into World War II, died on Monday at his home in Grass Valley, Calif. “The ship was consumed in a giant fireball,” he wrote in his memoir, “The Lou Conter Story: From U.S.S. Arizona Survivor to Unsung American Hero” (2021), a collaboration with Annette C. Hull and Warren R. Hull. Mr. Conter, who was knocked forward but uninjured, tended to survivors, many of them blinded and badly burned. Only 93 of those who were aboard the ship at the time lived; 242 other crew members were ashore.

Big news for (some) video game players: Microsoft is going to stop making you use Microsoft devices to play (some) Microsoft games. AdvertisementVery short summary of the console video game business: It's common for video game hardware makers to also own or license games that are exclusively for their devices. The idea is that a single game (or several games) will be enough reason for a gamer to buy a specific device. Maybe, as Warren reports, Microsoft will also announce new hardware plans at the same time it makes the new software change. But it's hard to see how the games move alone is going to be anything more than Microsoft accepting reality.

New York CNN —America has a housing affordability crisis and Elizabeth Warren blames Jerome Powell and his colleagues at the Federal Reserve. To fight inflation, the Fed spiked interest rates at the fastest pace since the early 1980s. However, the Fed’s war on inflation set off shockwaves in the housing market. The one-two punch of elevated borrowing costs and record-high home prices has made the housing market historically unaffordable. “High interest rates have aggravated the country’s crisis of housing access and affordability,” the Senate Democrats wrote.

WASHINGTON — Sen. Elizabeth Warren is sounding alarm bells about the future of regional banks in a new letter Thursday to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and a top advisory group for bank regulators. In the letter to Yellen, obtained exclusively by CNBC, Warren addresses the secretary in her capacity as chair of the Financial Stability Oversight Council, and asks her and the council to investigate several looming threats to banks. "I urge you to take strong action to address the alarming fallout from high interest rates and protect the safety of our financial system," Warren writes. The request follows an August announcement by Moody's that it was downgrading 10 regional banks, and putting another 17 banks either under review or changing their outlooks from stable to negative. The Massachusetts senator has been an outspoken critic of the increases, warning Federal Reserve Chairman Jay Powell and others that higher interest rates will ultimately hurt working Americans, even if they appear to exert downward pressure on inflation.

Biden announced reforms to the bankruptcy process for student-loan borrowers in November. In November, the Education and Justice Departments announced they were changing the way student-loan borrowers can attempt to discharge their loans through bankruptcy. The bankruptcy process for student-loan borrowers has also been under increased scrutiny recently from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. Ron DeSantis also recently said during remarks unveiling his economic plan should he be president that he supports bankruptcy as a path for student-loan borrowers. As is typical with government programs, implementing changes to the bankruptcy process could take some time.

Ron DeSantis of Florida suspended the top state prosecutor in Orlando on Wednesday, accusing her of incompetence and neglect of duty for what he characterized as lenience against violent criminals. Mr. DeSantis suspended Monique H. Worrell, the elected state attorney of Florida’s Ninth Judicial Circuit, which includes Orange and Osceola counties, and cited her handling of three cases. It is the second time in a year that Mr. DeSantis, a Republican running for president, has taken the drastic and exceedingly rare step of removing an elected state attorney. Critics, and even a federal judge, blasted Mr. DeSantis’s ouster of Mr. Warren as politically motivated. But Mr. Warren remains out of office — and Mr. DeSantis mentions his removal in just about every campaign stump speech.

Ron DeSantis said he supports bankruptcy as an option for student-loan borrowers. The Education and Justice Departments announced reforms to ease the bankruptcy process. But he does think bankruptcy should be an option for borrowers who cannot afford to pay off their debt. Debate over the issue of bankruptcy for student-loan borrowers has been ongoing, and a topic lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have been concerned about. Last week, Warren requested updated information from the Justice Department on the status of implementation of the new reforms to the process.

WASHINGTON, July 20 (Reuters) - Twitter, which has asked a court to terminate a consent order struck last year with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) related to data breaches, said in a court filing on Thursday that it planned to subpoena Senator Elizabeth Warren in connection with the fight. After billionaire Elon Musk took over Twitter last year, the company laid off thousands of employees and drastically cut costs, prompting questions about whether it had the resources to comply with the FTC consent order. Twitter asked last week for the consent order to be scrapped, accusing the FTC of bias and overreach in filings in federal court in San Francisco. The court filing on Thursday said the subpoena to Warren requested communications regarding Twitter or its owner Elon Musk between her office and the FTC, as well as her office and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Twitter responded to a request for comment by sending a poop emoji, as is its standard practice.

Georgia Republicans are holding their state party convention in early June. Former President Donald Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence are speaking on different days. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the embattled former president and the yet-to-declare former vice president have already locked down speaking slots for the two-day GOP convention, kicking off June 9. Ron DeSantis, who is hopscotching across Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina this week to build support in those early primary states, declined to comment on whether he would participate in the Georgia GOP meeting. Kemp, who won a second term in November 2022, is skipping the GOP convention altogether.
The Fed IG has faced particular heat over its investigation into the central bankers' trading activities. In addition, the Fed’s IG has yet to complete a hotly anticipated investigation into regional Fed leader trading even after news of that situation broke in September 2021. He said the fact that the report absolving Powell and Clarida was short on information was “intentional” due to the still-ongoing inquiry into regional Fed trading. “I absolutely agree that the allegations of improper trading and ethics violations are disturbing and they are alarming,” the Fed IG said. Leading the Senate panel, Democrat Elizabeth Warren blasted the incompleteness of the investigation and tied many of the IG’s problems to structural issues.

Florida lawmakers sent DeSantis a bill that would let him stay governor while running for president. "I don't think we have seen a six-month stretch that has ever been this productive in the history of our state," DeSantis said at the Florida Capitol in Tallahassee on Friday. Should DeSantis be successful in a presidential run, he would follow in the footsteps of Democrat Bill Clinton and Republican George W. Bush. Ron DeSantis speaks during an election night watch party at the Convention Center in Tampa, Florida, on November 8, 2022. During a press conference in Panama City, Florida, on Thursday, DeSantis continued to play coy about his intentions.

2024 GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley said absentee Sen. Dianne Feinstein should resign now. Haley maintains that removing Feinstein is necessary because she's no longer "up to the job." And that's not sexist," Haley tweeted in response to Pelosi and others rallying to Feinstein's side during her months-long absence from Capitol Hill. While she praised Feinstein as a political trailblazer, Haley said that's ancient history. "It's been obvious for quite some time that she's in significant mental and physical decline," Haley wrote online, billing Feinstein as "a prime example of why we need mental competency tests for politicians."
incumbent President Joe Biden is officially running for reelection in 2024 to "finish the job." Some House and Senate Republicans cast a second Biden term as certain doom. "Finishing the job would be truly catastrophic," Ted Cruz said, riffing on Biden's reelection theme. Cruz delved even deeper into the bleakness, predicting that a second Biden administration would usher in more inflation, crime, illegal crossings at the southern border and embolden global adversaries including Russia, China, Iran and North Korea. And surely, we can do better than that," Wicker told Insider at the US Capitol.
Under the legislation — which still has a long road to becoming law — the debt ceiling would rise by just $1.5 trillion, or until March 31, 2024, depending on whichever comes first. Democratic senators insisted on Wednesday that the House bill is dead on arrival in the Senate. "I don't think it will have any impact on what happens in the Senate," Sen. Chris Coons, a Delaware Democrat, told Insider of the House bill on Wednesday afternoon. But GOP Sen. Ron Johnson told Insider that he thinks House Republicans "are doing the right thing." That means that both parties need to come to an agreement on an approach to raise the debt ceiling before the country hurdles into a default, expected early this summer.
